As expected, this was dark, gritty, and set in Ohio. Donald Ray Pollock is the master at writing about flawed people living under these conditions. I was glued to this from beginning to end. This was one of those stories where you meet many characters and watch how their lives eventually overlap with each other in interesting ways. The one aspect that really caught me off guard and created some unexpected intrigue was “the bird”.

I love the southern genre and this had the ingredients to satisfy, and it did to a certain extent. It just didn’t feel like a fully coherent or confident piece of writing. (It makes me realise how hard it is to write something that is coherent and fills the reader with confidence that the journey they’re being taken on will be worthwhile). Throughout I had the feeling of being constantly under nourished; that the book lacked carbs, or sugar, or seasoning or something.
Talking of Sugar, I did quite enjoy his thread. I had high hopes for him!
Overall, The Heavenly Table was quite good but I wouldn’t go back for a second helping.

Een stelletje hillbillies op de onderste tree van de maatschappelijke ladder wordt door omstandigheden (het leek allemaal zo simpel in het begin) een van de meest gezochte groep misdadigers van Amerika. Daarnaast een boer die ook aan lager wal is geraakt, een legerkamp dat zich op de eerste wereldoorlog aan het voorbereiden is, een act met een aap, en een hoerentent.
