When reading books by Chris Whitaker I often find it hard to breathe as his writing is so incredibly beautiful. What a story!
I think this is the most devastating book I’ve ever read. I’ll admit there were a few times where I considered stopping if only to give my heart a break. However, I’m so happy that I held out until the ending. This is a beautiful story that keeps you on the edge of your seat and allows you to live so strongly in the emotions and mindsets of the characters. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to read a complex mystery with a cast of strong, unique, and resilient characters.
Chris Whitaker is an amazing writer. The characters of Star, Duchess, Robin, Walk and Vincent are flawed, human and beautiful. A heartbreaking story that will stay with me for a long time.

This was HEARTBREAKING. Once again, this author has done an incredible job in describing the human experience. Every character was perfect. I am gutted by this book and will be for quite some time. I will also recommend it to literally everyone I know.

Meh & a disappointment given its reviews. It just didn't work for me, I found it somewhat cliched: (small US town suffers terrible crime & inhabitants feel the consequences) and featured a catalogue of cliche damaged characters - not least the sweet eccentric old lady rescuer...... By the same token of throw-it-all in writing it was too slow to be a thriller but had too much bubblegum wisdom to work on an emotional/resonating level so it just missed all its targets. Finally, (& I think this is an issue when a non-native author writes a novel that is rooted in its location) Cape Haven did not feel real or distinct in any way from a hundred other fictional small American towns and the children's school experience also seemed vaguely familiar and thin in a generic fashion.
A book that has benefited from 2020 and its horrors where we are desperate for entertainment that takes it away, I doubt in a less challenging year this would have been as lauded.

This is a great read! I was really moved by the characters and The Outlaw Duchess Day Radley will stay with me for quite some time. A young girl who has seen too much, felt too much pain, and is mostly angry and made bitter by the world by age 13, still manages to try and protect the person she loves more than herself. And she does a pretty good job until she can’t and it seems nothing good comes around for her, and she can’t trust it even if it does. For Duchess another tragedy, another lie, another broken trust, her background unknown. A small town Sheriff plays a significant part in her life and her history, and his actions may or may not help Duchess. I enjoyed this and would recommend it wholeheartedly!!!
