The overall point is excellent: Straight relationships are expected to be unfulfilling to women, that the man won't be a feminist advocate for her, that she'll shoulder a heavier burden of childcare. If men desire women so much, shouldn't they wish to take on some parts of her identity, and also to be her fiercest ally (i.e. a feminist)?

- Gay men have talked about how being gay causes them to be treated worse by society. In a heterosexual relationship, the man benefits and the woman generally is disadvantaged. Lesbians receive worst treatment in society for being lesbian, but escape many of the downsides that come with a heterosexual relationship.

- From a young age, women are indoctrinated that they must choose to be in a heterosexual marriage or long-term relationship, even though the expectation is that she will be mansplained, required to do more than her fair share of childcare / household labor, not respected, and her sexual needs will usually be put at a lower priority than his.

- Men are taught that female beauty requires a bunch of modifications, removing body hair, accentuating facial features, etc.

- Straight culture involves being very basic, a follower, not trying to be too unique. It also involves a lot of female complaint, which is enforced in media.

- Lesbian culture values many things higher than following conventional looks, such as relationship skills, sexual skills, swagger.

- Straight culture tries to conscript everyone into following their cultural markers, which are gendered and constrictive. E.g. coming of age party for each gender, bridal shower, bachelorette, gender reveal, baby shower. There's a pressure on women that if they don't marry a man and have children, while they still look the conventional way, their life will be ruined.

It's all correct and interesting information that's important to be talking about, but I also didn't necessarily learn tons - I already know most of how the systems are fucked up. It's an interesting spin on the topic, something of a reversal of how things seem to often default to being seen from the heterosexual as base assumption. I wish there had been some deeper exploration, and perhaps a few more varied perspectives from additional authors.
