I picked this book up in a second hand shop simply because I fell in love with the cover. It wasn't until later that I found out it was written in 1900, but no matter, I was determined to read it.

The first few chapters are really funny, I found myself laughing out loud several times, and the hilarity continued whenever we got a chapter of the three men actually doing something or talking to each other. Unfortunately, the author likes to drone on about his opinions of Germany, which I shouldn't be surprised about but that in my opinion brought nothing of enjoyment to the table.

I will not read this again, but it will stay on my shelf simply for the delightful cover art and amusing title.

Not quite as brilliantly funny from start to end as Three Men in a Boat, but still very, very funny. And with a little throwaway bit at the end when the narrator talks about his impressions of the German people that gave me chills in hindsight.

It's a bit scattered and random, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the follow-up account of a bicycling trip through Germany. Very funny bits about trying to speak foreign languages, overestimating how far you can ride, getting lost, troubles with the police, Ugly British travelers, and other wacky hijinks. One star was taken off for the uneven tone, including a serious conclusion with a creepy early-20th century description of the German people are kind, homely, rule-followers with a slavish adherence to policemen. Eerily accurate! But out of place in a book of tomfoolery.
