Goodness gracious. Sy Montgomery blends the scientific and the spiritual in a way that speaks to me. There is love on every one of these pages, even when she's describing a tough time. Sy's inspirational in that she's built a life that is unconventional and yet perfect for herself. It's adventurous and yet homely and cozy. I admire how candidly she writes about the tough times and her complicated relationship with her family. Her husband, Howard, sounds so lovely. And Sy is a Jane Goodall fan so you know she's a real nature lover. This was a great book to read for this season in my life which has had less nature and travel than I would prefer.

The book in itself is basically a memoir about the author’s relationship with the animals in her life. Montgomery is mostly known for being a naturalist. But for people wanting to learn more about the animal world, this might not be for them. This is a love letter to and an acknowledgment of the way animals recreate and change our lives. And the difficulty that comes with choosing to love them. The unspeakable loss when they pass, and the extreme gratitude of having them in our lives. And ultimately, how we need to learn to respect them, and understand them as well. I was a bit confused when the author delved into the dream/spiritual realm. It felt a bit jarring to me. But everyone has their own personal limits (for some it might be the extreme, almost suicidal depression that occurs after a pet’s death. For me, that’s natural) but I feel that’s more on us as the reader than on the author. Ultimately, this is a book about animals and the power they have on our capacity to love.
