I enjoyed this. It was unique and original in the way the story unfolded. I don’t want to say too much because I think this is the type of book that needs to be read with as little background information as possible. I will say that the beginnii I my was slow for me but then picked up and kept me engaged.

An incredible bite size book in the style of Atwood but far surpassing  her works. Giddings’ has demonstrated ability to put her in the ranks of N.K. Jemison & her contemporaries in the realms of urban fantasy/magical realism

This book paints a picture of an all-too-real dystopian world where women exist only under the control of men, with the excuse that all of them are potential witches, and where black women in particular bear the brunt of this. There's a realism too it because it echoes so much of what goes on in the real world. This is not a light read, as Jo navigates a world where there's no real way for her to stay in full control of her life. She also comes from a family that doesn't look out for her in the ways that she would like. There are well-meaning characters in the book too, but even they are forced to exist in the dysfunctional system presented. There are seeds of hope in this book, but there's also a lot of darkness, made more intense by all the echoes of the reality we live in.
