became aware halfway through this read that it's awful to read neil gaiman in 2024, but let's separate the art from the artist, am i right? this book was enchanting, whimsical, the perfect intersection of childhood and adulthood - that blend of nostalgia i adore. i have to say the beginning was much more exciting for me than the end and led me to think i'd be reading a different kind of novel: more introspective, more about the gaps of memory and the chasm between adulthood and the lost years of childhood, and that the speculative nature of it would be a means to serve this end. by the end of the book, i felt as though something had been lost along the way. i think i'll have to let this one sit with me a bit longer before i figure out exactly what. but anyway - this novel had the charm and coziness of a ghibli film. it carries within something timeless. 4.5/5

Nobody looks like what they really are on the inside. You don’t. I don’t. People are much more complicated than that. It’s true of everybody.

Reading this gave me a nostalgic, dreamy feeling. It was scary but also had a comforting feel to it at the same time. But it mostly just felt like a weird fever dream with characters I sadly couldn't manage to connect with.

Neil Gaiman has a wonderful way with words - he's a very talented writer. He can make something really creepy and scary seem ok and fascinating. This book was very well written and I enjoyed the story. I often felt as confused as the main character by the events but I enjoyed the journey.

This was my first time reading Gaiman, and I really enjoyed this! There is so much packed in this short novel, between beautiful imagery and symbolism, that I found myself consistently trying to figure out what fantastical events may unfold next and where it would all land. To me, the interplay that I found most fascinating was between the perspective of our now middle-aged protagonist and his childhood memories filled with magic, wonder, and supernatural, that we revisit. I found the ending incredibly satisfying and gorgeous, with the last paragraph or two filling in any remaining puzzle pieces as to what we may have just been witness to. So much so, I think I will revisit this again in the future, with this new lens in mind.

Heel fijn en mooi klein verhaal over vertrouwen en onzelfzuchtigheid.

“Monsters come in all shapes and sizes. Some of them are things people are scared of. Some of them are things that look like things people used to be scared of a long time ago. Sometimes monsters are things people should be scared of, but aren’t.”
Neil Gaiman is a master at setting an ambiance. The book was a perfect balance of fear and relief. I think it’s worth pointing out that it is magical realism. And the way memory works in it is truly bittersweet. Do read it... it’s worth it.
