I love starting a George Saunders story that spits you out into a slightly distorted world and then wrecks you as you start putting the pieces together. The collection was uneven but often moving in unexpected ways.

Top Stories- Liberation Day, Love Letter, Sparrow, Mom of Bold Action. This was good, although not as affecting as Tenth of November. There is still no one who demands more work from their reader than George Saunders.

There’s a passage in the first story in which the speaker is in the mind of a civil war soldier writing to his wife describing the feeling of watching her drop her robe from her body and stand naked before him. That’s a lot of framing, but the passage itself is one of the most singularly beautiful pieces of writing I’ve ever come across. I’m not an audiobook person and this audio rules; it’s just absolutely fantastic.

It’s hard to love every single short story of a collection because some of these I thought were excellent and some weren’t as strong, so I feel like short story collections typically get a lower average rating. This was very futuristic and dystopian, and it did a good job highlighting real issues we suffer from today in a new way. Definitely an interesting read

I'll have more to say about this later-- and I might even record it here-- but for now, I'll leave it at: This was the perfect last book to a year. The last story was a great way to close out 2023
