Typically not a fan of short stories but GS sure is good at them. They are quite weird, some borderline harrowing. These are best consumed in audible format because of the all-star cast.

What a fascinating collection of short stories! Each one stayed with me to ponder on, worry at and extract some additional insight.

An amazing set of short stories from an amazing writer. My favorite excerpt from a recent "Lunch with the FT" with the author:

"The Irish novelist Anne Enright, reviewing Liberation Day in the Guardian last month, teasingly wrote: “Why is such a nice man so mean to the nice people he invents?”"

Says it all really. But does it? The story “Sparrow” - good hearted and uplifting - is in fact positively numinous.

I agree there were some exceedingly complex stories.

Beautiful collection of short stories. George Saunders just leaving fully into the weird. Some people may dislike these stories for that reason, but I am charmed by them, just s as I am charmed by Saunders.

Could not love this collection more

Either I’ve got overfamiliar with GS or he’s got overfamiliar with his themes, because this collection felt predictable, even a little hokey, compared to his best.

There are still moments, but it’s perhaps the last of his I’d recommend.
