Beautiful and challenging, to the point where I needed to pause between stories just to calm back down. Most of the stories lack a linear narrative or a reliable narrator and start in the action. This approach makes these stories worth rereading several times. I especially loved the eponymous story and Sparrow.

Saunders, Evolved

What a joy! The fantastic, bewildering occupations. The lovely language of that letter in the eponymous story. Thinking you are one place, but then inhabiting the consciousness of another, upending all. The unexpected, occasional happy ending. The economy of word. Thankful for this tour through worlds.

I love dystopian stories, and Saunders did not disappoint!

I’m a huge Saunders fan but this collection wasn’t as good as his previous ones.

The high notes were remarkable, but I struggled with nearly half of the stories. I really didn't care for those stories written in the voice of a human who'd had their memories wiped, or when he's using broken English of some kind. Colloquialisms often seemed forced.

3.5 stars. I don't think I'm the best audience for short stories. They were very intriguing. I just wanted more of each story, which is maybe the point, but I find that slightly unsatisfying.
