Irena and her co-conspirators' story of saving Jewish children in Warsaw during WWll is a fantastic tale of heroism.
Their actions were powerful and heartbreaking.
This book is good at telling her story. Yet, it becomes redundant in several places. I feel it could've been better without retelling of previous information.

A bit speculative at points, more fluff than I care for in a nonfiction book. When I’m reading about something that actually happened I don’t like to read a bunch of “perhaps” which happened quite a bit, sometimes with inconsequential details like when Irena and Adam met. This was a very interesting story though, one I had never heard before, and it makes me want to learn more about the Holocaust.

Fascinating story. The writing style seemed to target a young adult audience.

An amazing bit of history I did not have a dry eye the whole way though. So tough how the war had finished but she was still being punished. Only recently the story could be told due to communism.

Thought this was interesting. Felt like parts of the story had been copied and posted into different chapters.

This is a fascinating read about people who saved others during the Nazi occupation of Poland in World War II. Highly recommended.

Note: The Kindle version is currently on sale for $2.99.

**I did not read the adaptation that is shown here but my Goodreads app is having a hard time switching editions** This was an interesting story of which I was not previously aware. I had it on the shelf (I think it was a LFL find?) and am waiting for my library holds to come through.

This book reads like a fictional thriller, I had to keep reminding myself that it was non-fiction!! This book was heartbreaking! I have read many Holocaust memoirs and I am shocked I have never heard of Irena Sendler! What a remarkable woman... this was a book about her, along with 30 other co conspirators and their efforts to smuggle children out of the Warsaw ghetto and hide them on the Aryan side with falsified papers until the end of the war! They risked their lives and together saved around 2,500 children! This book mentioned so many people whose stories were so inspiring, or in one case despicable, I wish I could read books about them all! Dr. Janusz Korczak ran the orphanage in the Warsaw ghetto, and when the gestapo came to March all the children to the train depot which would take them to the gas chambers, he decided to go with the children to help bring a sense of calm in their final hours! He stayed with those children until the very end knowing he was voluntarily going to die as well!! This book also talked about Wiera Gran, a Jewish cabaret singer and gestapo informer who lured hundreds of her own people to their deaths!! This book didn’t sugar coat a thing... it was a devastating, eye opening read!
