I hate to give this a 3*, but something just didn’t sit right with me about this book. It was too neat? Memory Keeper’s Daughter was a far better story related to this topic.
A friend recommended this author to me and luckily I won this as part of a Goodreads giveaway. Having been in the field of Special Education for 35 years this is a sensitive topic. I found it to be beautiful but also heartbreaking. Seems very accurate, I know children were placed in institutions before the education system accepted them. Tough to read at times but I loved it.
A quick and engaging read that introduced me to a darker period of history. I did not realize how horribly differently-abled individuals were treated as recently as 50 years ago, and I know we still have a long way to go.
I liked this book so much more than I thought I would! I loved seeing Ginny’s transformation from powerless victim to a bold fighter for her daughter’s rights. It was also interesting (and also sad) to read about people’s perceptions of special needs just 40 years ago. Highly recommending this book!
It's been years since I read T. Greenwood. I still highly recommend Nearer the Sky (note to self: reread that). She has the BEST storytelling skills.
I knew this one was going to be a tough one to get through, subject-wise. And it was. It will rip your heart out. BUT! In addition to the main story of a woman saving her child there is this pervasiveness of what life was like before womens' rights (not that it is a finished deal). Honestly, having no choice, no say in your life....shudder. It made me so grateful for all of the women who came before me, who fought the fight (while also raising children and working for a living). I'm so grateful!!
It's also a little survey of Roadside attractions.
Great read.
