I'm so sorry that it took me so long to get around to reading this one, and so sorry that this is the last book with Miri. Fantastic series, fantastic story. Each of these could stand fairly well on their own, but they're so good. Each character is so strong and rich.

I just finished this one and I'm still processing it (I read it fast, when I could sneak it away from my daughter). I liked the storyline and the new characters and even how all was resolved, but I felt it was heavy on what I think has become Shannon Hale's soapbox and that is the portrayal of female characters (I read her blog...). She has a point and an accurate portrayal of the fact that female characters can be strong and courageous is important, but I felt this dominated as a theme...maybe that was her point. While she has a lot of strong female characters without too many flaws, her male characters come across as flawed. I like a balance.

Princess Academy (the first book in the series) is a middle grade Newbury Award winning book from 10 years ago. I found it faced out at the library last summer, read it, and then picked up the sequel. This book is the final in the series, and it's no less delightful or engaging than the other two. It has high adventure and fun characters, humor and seriousness, good dialogue and good plotting. It's the kind of book I have no qualms recommending, rereading, and sharing with pretty much everyone in my life.

Though this is the last book in the series, it could be read alone without really losing anything in the story. (Granted, it's more a book for girls than for boys.) Highly recommended.

Highly enjoyable conclusion to Princess Academy!

This is not a book about fairy princesses. This is not a fluffy story about girls who can't take care of themselves and need to be rescued by a prince. This is a book packed with girl power. These girls hold their own.
Yes, there is some romance. Yes, there are strong male characters too who are helpful. But the story and the mission are driven by the girls.
Apart from that,(which was required for clearing up any misconceptions about the title) I repeat something I said about the second book in the series: This is a reflection of the real world, packed with poverty, corruption, deceit and fear. And it is packed with real characters who have to find a way to survive.
I wish I could give this book six stars.

I read the first two books in the "Princess Academy," years ago. All the memories of reading them came back as I read this conclusion.

One of my favorite things about all the books in the series (and all the books I have read by Shannon Hale) is the great role models. The characters don't have absolutely stunning looks, the best personalities, and out-of-this-world romances. They are everyday people who strive to be kind and make a good life for themselves. There is nothing wrong with bigger-than-life characters, but it is nice to have relatable characters, too.

Another thing I like is Shannon Hale's writing style. She is a master of witty poems and phrases. Some of them genuinely made me laugh out loud. Her descriptions are great, too. It was easy for me to visualize the world she had built .

So glad I finally finished reading this delightful series.

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars

A great ending to a great series! I wish there was more!

This was a refreshing read, and it makes me sad to see the end of the Princess Academy books.
