A thought-provoking and beautifully written collection of short stories. Little touches of speculation and magical-realism. Probably 4.5* but rounded up because of all the cats :D

Brilliant short stories

This rating feels a bit harsh but then Goodreads doesn't allow half-stars. 2.5?

There were some stories in this collection that I really enjoyed, but I feel that there were just a few too many that felt like they went nowhere, or were a bit clumsy. The steam-of-consciousness snippets have their place but I guess they are just not my cup of tea.

I did enjoy some of the more complete stories, with my favourites being 'Our Sleeping Lungs Opened to the Cold'; 'Pang & Co. Genuine Scribe Era Stationery Pty Ltd'; 'Washing Day'; and 'Excision in F Sharp Minor'.

Something inherently Aussie about these stories and I absolutely loved it. These were the perfect mix of humour and insanity.

This was all I was promised. A little of Ted Chiang. A little bit of George Saunders. AND lots of cats! What's not to like?

My favourites were the intricately folded 'A Girl Is Sitting on A Unicorn in the Middle of a Shopping Centre', the ominous yet strangely comforting 'Lola Metronome and Calliope St Laurent Having a Picnic at the End of Civilisation as We Know It' and the twisting 'You Put The U In Utopia.'
