The Winter Witch by Paula Brackston

Brackston knows what she is doing. Exactly the book that you would expect it to be. A bit of a slow paced, classic 'young witch finding her power' and being 'not like other girls' type of story. The Welsh countryside is like another character. Will is suprise you? Probably not. Will it make you want start calling people 'cariad'? Probably

There were parts of this story that I liked very much, but other parts dragged. It was one of those stories that could have been told with about 100 less pages. I liked the characters and the overall storyline, but it was very predictable.

This was a slow burn, but as someone with Welsh heritage and my own little corgi, it was a sort of comfort this winter. The only reason I'm not rating it higher is, despite lots of emotional things taking place, I found this book was written in such a way that I didn't personally feel those impacts as well, even though I should have.

This book held my attention throughout almost the whole book, the story of Morgana and how she chooses not to speak due to previous trauma was really interesting to me. She was to be this super powerful witch that didn't realize she was super powerful. Her witch power has yet to be untapped and discovered. I would've liked if she would've started talking maybe half way throughout the book. I get why she doesn't but it would've been maybe a better take on the story if she did. She spends half of the book discovering her relationship with Cai and the other half discovering how to become a great witch. Cai was a great character, coming over the death of his previous wife he is drawn towards Morgana. He has patience beyond his years to handle Morgana and her different ways. He loves his farm and animals more than life itself. So seeing that Morgana loves the farm and outdoors so much really settles his heart and I enjoyed their interactions outdoors so much more. Cai is an overall good guy and I think that's what made me like him so much.
The style and setting of the book was well written, did I like how the bad people were set up not really. There was no background on why they were the way they were. Why did the main bad person wait so long to do what they did? Where did they come from? Onward and upward. I loved all the Welsh terms and visual settings that were explained.

This was my first read by this author and while it was an interesting enough narrative, I won't be going back to read others by her. The pacing was seriously off on this one. It did not live up to its cover jacket hype. While I loved the character of Morgana the author spent more time taking her on a road trip with her husband's cattle than she spent on developing her powers which were "suddenly just there" when she needed them at a critical moment. It was just a bit too contrived for me at the conclusion. I got the book on discount at my favorite Indy bookstore is about the best I can say about it.

I received my copy of The Winter Witch from the publishers as part of the blog tour.  I had not previously heard of this book or the author, but after some quick research I quickly decided that I HAD to read this book.
When I began reading I thought the first few chapters really grabbed hold, but after that I found myself struggling to turn the pages.  In all honesty it was nothing to do with the story and more the size of the book itself.  Being over 400 pages long, and a hardback, it felt like the book was never ending and I thought I would never make a dent in it.  But I persevered and soon found myself wanting to know what happens, seeing if Morgana and Cai would find some way to make their relationship work and be 'normal'.
The Winter Witch follows Morgana, as she is sent to live with her husband after their marriage has been arranged by her Mother, not only to benefit Morgana, but also to benefit Cai. Without a wife he can't be a drover and it is something he was before His wife died, and something that has been passed down through his family.  Morgana is a strong willed character who you just can't help cheering on. She faced discrimination every single day of her life, and later on abuse from others, yet not once does she give up and walk away. She is determined to see it through and not let anyone scare her away. She faces things head on and when things get tough, she pushes even harder.

The Winter Witch had twists and turns that I never expected, and as each new revelation was uncovered it drew me into the plot even more. The last few chapters had me on tenterhooks wondering what was going to happen next, and when the ending was in sight I thought it ended perfectly. Once I finally fell into the world that Paula has created I found it hard to come out. I had to know what was going to happen to this couple and if the world they were building for themselves would stand the test of time. I found myself wanting to read faster to know how it ends, and as I saw the pages left to read getting smaller and smaller I found myself wanting to keep reading.  Magic is weaved seamlessly through the pages and you soon find yourself astounded with the power that Morgana has and what she can do with it.

Paula has written a story filled with magic, mystery and secrets, one you never know how it will all end.  The Winter Witch was an enjoyable read and I am glad I persevered with this book.

This was just not my book, I don't even think that there was anything wrong with characters or the writing I just didn't enjoy it. Multiple times I considered just stopping but I kept hoping it got better. Unfortunately for me it didn't.
