Lala's story was entirely engrossing and beautifully written. I loved the dialogue here, and the book was brutal and riveting. The only complaint I have is that I would have loved to see more of Mira's story.

The author Cherie Jones really depicts the scenery of where the book takes place on Baxter’s Beach in the island of Barbados very well and you can almost feel the imagery and a great visual description of the characters. The only thing is the plot progression seemed a bit too fast paced towards the ending.
The book covers a lot of topics on domestic violence especially, abuse (physical, psychological/emotional, sexual, etc) in the time period of the 1980’s through a depiction of several accounts through each character’s POV.
Fave quote that’s sums it up:
“In those tunnels, you understand that you do not learn to love a man, because for the man there is no need for the learning, the love is the most natural thing in the world. You understand that if you must learn to love a man, he is probably not the man you should be loving.” (pg. 204)

This book has left me gasping, speechless, and almost crying, multiple times. Not for the faint of heart.
