There has been a lot of chatter about this book, much of it negative--on the lines of "Not as good as Girl on the Train." But I think it's a better book--a perfectly good mystery, less gimmicky, and better-constructed, as one would hope would happen with a second book. I particularly appreciated that a central conflict between two sisters turns on their different perspectives and assumptions. The younger is sure that the elder betrayed her when she was only 13, and she has deliberately allowed their distance to grow until finally they are irrevocably estranged. But when the elder sister dies and the younger must assume guardianship of her teen niece, she finally discovers that her own experience of the events was in some ways based on assumptions that led her far from the truth. There is a lot else going on in the novel--it is full of crimes old and new--but the way that emotion plays on memory was particularly well done.
Really liked the story line, but wish there were perspectives from a few less characters
I have not read Girl on the Train, but I found Into the Water a quick read. It definitely reminded me of the BBC show Broadchurch. I think, arguably, there are too many characters-each with his/her own perspective. There was almost too much going on... too many stories. But, Hawkins kept me reading because I wanted to find out the truth.
An exceptional author. I look forward to the next book in anticipation. You seldom get "can't put it down books" and so many try to be but fail in their attempt. This author creates 5 star novels
This was good. I liked it better than Girl on the Train (I *hated* the ending of that one) Quick, enjoyable read. #engelbrechtreads2019 #engelbrechtreads
This hit hard for me and was really so devastating in certain moments. While I could predict the majority of it, I love the way it played out and the author's storytelling.
3.5/5

Good story. Decently complex characters. Predictable ending. Entirely too long for the predictability. Not as good as Girl on the Train!
