It took a very long time to finish reading this book. There were far too many POVs and so, so many of them didn't matter. It took ages to remember who that person of the POV even was on top of that
Why did Nickie's inclusion even matter? There was nothing supernatural about the plot and all that she had to offer truly didn't change anything about the story. You could remove her entirely from the story and nothing would have changed.
The book starts out with Lousie coming back in from sneaking out and her son, Josh, covers for her. That didn't come up again until the very end and was closed up with one sentence that I don't understand how it relates at all, or maybe it wasn't even related to that at the end.
Even with the "shock" factor of who really did it, it still doesn't explain the bracelet.
And Lena, a teenager, was able to allegedly drag a full grown man out to sea before running off into town?
So much of this story just didn't make sense and was so boring on top of it all. Highly do not recommend. It's a skip, for sure.

Spoilers. Review really for my eyes only so I can remember the ending.
Nell died at drowning pool. "Drowning pool isn't for suicide it's for getting rid of troublesome women" Brings up all the small town drama and history. Patrick killed wife 20yrs ago and took blame for Nell even though son (Nell's lover and her book's subject) did it.

Slow beginning, took me awhile to get through this...once I hit half way I flew through it. It definitely kept me interested and guessing. I couldn’t put it down once I hit the second half. I do however feel very confused and wasn’t super excited about the ending - I was hoping for more closure then what we were left with.
Was a pretty good whodunnit. A few too many characters points of view perhaps made it disjointed for me, especially if you don't read a lot of it at a time. Overall well done, but nothing special.
The mystery kept me going, but why are so many people so damn unlikeable? Had the same problem in books like 'Murders at Fleat house' and actually 'the girl on the train' as well (liked this mystery better than the latter tho)

The plot in this is rather disjointed despite suspensful, but again Hawkins' writing makes sure to wreck our brains, with a cliffhanger this time.
“No one liked to think about the fact that the water in that river was infected with the blood and bile of persecuted women, unhappy women; they drank it every day.”
actual rating: 4.5 stars
WOW, this is -by far- the best thriller I've ever read. Paula's writing style is amazing and so fast paced.
and she's able to change perspectives really well.. I actually hated that the book had a lot of POVs and it was kinda slow at the beginning for me , but then it picked up and when I knew who was who I saw that changing perspectives was what kept the story going
I loved it so much, imma be reading anything she writes
