Very slow read, slow start. An interesting twist at the end. But I had a very hard time reading through. As with her last novel, I did it like most of the characters. In fact, I don’t think I liked any of them. Nel, he we known only through others is what feels like a self centered, self interested person. Jules, her sister is so clueless that when the least likeable characters of all (Patrick) calls her slow you kind of say to yourself “oh that’s it, she’s a bit slow”.

I also didn’t like the central story in that it revolves around a relationship between a teacher and a student. Hawkins wants to believe it was true love and I just can’t get with that.

A lot of characters, and some of the story lines (i.e., abusive teacher, crone) were underdeveloped. Stronger linkage between colonial past and present would also have enhanced the narrative. It felt like a lot of jumping around, trying to tie things together.

I think this book was a mix of unlikable characters, unfortunate accidents, and a lake.
Maybe I had high expectations or simply this book wasn't good enough. It wasn't really bad though. With this many characters, so much plot twists, I expected it to be better.
Why every character in the book was somehow insane? I think the only logical and normal character in the whole book was just Erin.
And also a little bit of my disappointment was because I was thinking so what?? This many characters died for what? Katie , Nell, (probably Mark),Lauren and so.
So based on this I'm not planning on reading The girl on the train.

Wayyy to many characters to keep track of. I should have written them down. This caused confusion and boredom in the end because I couldn’t keep anyone straight. Oh well.
