I really enjoyed the writing style and appreciated how much I learned while reading this book. I found the themes of family dynamics, body dysmorphia in today’s society, and the struggle of self-discovery particularly compelling.

Every now and then, I enjoy books with an anticlimactic style, so I wasn’t expecting a particularly remarkable ending. I appreciated how it aligned with the book’s overall atmosphere and that the author didn’t feel the need to provide a neatly satisfying conclusion. However, the ending still didn’t fully work for me, and I struggled to find a clear takeaway from the story—though, of course, not every story needs one.

PS: I would have loved to read it in the original language, but unfortunately, I couldn’t find a copy at my library. However, I’ll definitely watch the movie in French.

I really don't know how I feel but I'm very confused by the ending. Not because it ended abruptly necessarily but I have no idea what she's doing with the fugu... Is she trying to kill him? Over confident in her ability and showing off? Am I over thinking that specific detail? No one else ever mentions this.....

This was an absolute hit. Reminded me why I love to read. I wanted to live in the world of this book forever. So beautifully written, thoughtful, subtle, and moving. I liked that the writing style let me as the reader put in some work. Technically, most of the writing is very direct and straightforward. It describes events without leaning on interpretive descriptions, but there's so much to be picked up in the subtext. I found this really interesting and more true to life, and enjoyed being able to do some of the heavy lifting of understanding the weight behind these interactions without it necessarily being spelled out for me. Additionally, when something is spelled out for me, or the author makes a direct statement about her interpretation of events, it's all the more powerful. I'm not sure I could say what would push this from 4 stars to 5; maybe I just wanted it to be a bit longer and have the space to explore a little more. Also found out this was made in to a movie which has me actually foaming at the mouth like I spent the whole reading experience taking breaks to google places in Sokcho to try to firm up the image in my head I actually need to see this played out on film. So so good, immediately ran to reserve the author's other book at the library. Will be in my head and sneaking its way into my dreams for weeks I can feel it.

Almost each paragraphs of the book made me stop and look around to see whether I surrounded by little things with the beauty I could enjoy. Remind me with that one K-Drama I haven't finished yet: Hometown Chachacha.

Winter in Sokcho written as 'hazy lines', foggy, comforting atmosphere, and melancholic.

This is a classic case of all vibes and no plot. Sweet little novel though.

Reflective, slow and emotional. The colorful cover is a stark difference to what lies between the pages. Recommended.
