Frankly, I didn't think to write a review at first because I was too tired. But this book is the only thing I've been thinking about since yesterday, and I thought I should talk ab it, bcs I want to.
I just cannot help but think ab the different things the female lead was feeling, one of them being the relationship she has w her mum. We see how she has Mondays off and she spends them w her mum but there's this underlying tension as well and a sense of estrangement. That one part where she had to be firm on her decision to leave rather than staying when her aunt was in town, that one was so significant and relatable for me. And so many other places. The constant comments from her mum for getting a plastic surgery bcs that'll make her more 'acceptable' but also her mum ironically defending her and telling her aunt that she is so pretty and doesn't need it, that contrast was also so relatable. The female lead can't leave her mom and go to Seoul, there's that sense of loyalty while there being a sense of estrangement from what always has been and longing for a sense of self and what could be is just what hits so much in the gut, especially as a 20-something elder daughter in a brown household. GAH. LOVED IT.

very visceral details, liked the contrast of the colourful architecture with the darkness of the story, very quiet, i saw it described as claustrophobic and i agree
Seemed like the story was going nowhere. Writing style was not for me.
I'm conflicted here and the abrupt ending left a lot to be desired.
This is a character portrait of a French Korean young woman living in Sokcho, away from the hustle and bustle of Seoul in South Korea. Sokcho in Winter is about whatSokcho feels like in winter. It's a seaside twon, so all of their tourism depends on the summer, and in winter it turns to this almost desolate place, and of course it doesn't help being on the border with North Korea.
The MC works in a guest house, and the story open with a French artist coming to stay at their guest house, and how their relationship begins. She sees in him the other half of her existence, the French side she quietly dappled in from the safety of Korea, and he sees in her a good eye for art and life. There's also an interesting cast of characters in the background, who were more interesting to me than the French man, and they all low-key showcased other famously known aspect of South Korea, like cosmetic surgery, modelling, and relocating to Seoul where all the opportuinities are.
The MC seems to be lost and have no sense of direction of what she wants to do with her life, and she seems to project onto that French man a sense of a mission of sorts, like his existence has given her something to do.
It's an interesting novel, I just felt extremely detached from everything's that's happening.
