An easy to read book which I finished in one sitting, but I honestly don't know what it was about or if I truly understood it. Maybe it was a slice-of-life kind of thing. At one point, I thought the French man was the protagonist's father, here to reconnect with his daughter but no, that wasn't it. Then I thought the main character was going to poison the French man but that doesn't happen either.
So much is about to happen but it doesn't happen. The subtleties that I usually enjoy in a book fall flat in this novella. 2 stars for the style of writing, the description of Korean food and the bone-chilling winter.

I love the short sentences and how evocative it was overall. The sense of place and atmosphere was incredible, everytime I opened the book I forgot I was on the noisy Piccadilly line and genuinely thought I was in Sokcho. The book is quite raw, gritty, which I like. I usually dislike books that lack plot and describe locations - but something gripped me in this. It made me feel curious, but uneasy, in a good way. I was fascinated by the character and how the author used location to reflect their internal unrest (imo)

Vanskelig å si kas tema som egentlig e i hovedrollen; kropp, mor-/datter-forhold, rasisme, by/bygd, skjønnhet(sindustri), kjærlighet, sosial mobilitet, familie, litteratur, krig, møte mellom kultura …
Likte iallfall mye. Spesielt følelsen av kulde og ensomhet.
Ville kanskje gitt fem stjerne om æ faktisk forstod slutten

I inhaled this book. Theres nothing much going on, but at the same time I feel like it leaves a huge impact on me. Every passage of the book, I feel like I'm literally in Sokcho based on how the author described the place! I wanted to read more on what happened after, but I guess the author leaves it to us, the reader, on how we will interpret and continue the story.
It's a short read.
If you're into those books that have twists and turns and give you an adrenaline rush, this is not for you.
But if you're into books that follow simple story lines, have very ordinary characters (as they say in the book, it is not the hero but just another human), show you their lives and how days pass... this one is beautifully written.
Folks who also love reading Japanese literature and have enjoyed books like Strange weather in Tokyo, The Nakano Thrift shop etc. would love it.
Though the story ends in 154 pages, you will be left with so much to think, so many pictures to paint and if you lay down looking at the moving clouds or star-studded sky after finishing this book, you're definitely gonna think more and more about this book.

Short and engaging. Does a good job of capturing the location and the main character’s sadness.
