This biography focuses on Truman's first four months in office. As the last President without a college education, he represents the common man for sure. His appeal to everyday Americans, personal struggles, sweet devotion to his wife, and sense of humor make for some interesting anecdotes. His unexpected rise to the Presidency is quite remarkable, and his ability to go toe to toe with seasoned bureaucrats and world leaders in a most challenging time is impressive.

I have never read a biography on Harry S. Truman, but I found that this book grossly interesting and makes me excited to read more about Truman. Baime provides enough detail on Truman's early life for the reader to fully understand what went in to his decision making. I did know about the big decesions that Truman had to make in the beginning of his presidency, but Baime provided context surrounding the policital landscape at the time that provides a full picture. Baime is a journalist and the book is written in that style which it makes its really easy to read unlike some historians which can be quite dry and dull. I would fully reccomend this book to any ome who is looking to understand more about World War II or about President Truman.

3.0

The period of time Baime covers in this Biography, the first 4 months of Truman's presidency, is probably one of the most studied and documented periods of WWII. Baime uses this backdrop to make Truman seem like an amazing President and barely spends any time analyzing the President's political decisions. What we get are weak arguments about how Truman was an "ordinary" man that lived up to and exceeded the world's expectations of him and so the entire book falls flat.

This is a riveting history of Truman's first four months in office.

This book was informative and, dare I say, entertaining?

I enjoyed reading about Truman’s first four months in office, and I am appreciative of the form in which the book is written. It wasn’t as dry as many non-fiction books are.

Informing
