Yet another truly unrateable book. Props to the cover designer because whenever I turned off my ereader to see THAT staring back at me I felt nauseous. Jumpscared every time.

One star probably isn't fair. It is not written badly. And really I skimmed it. Perhaps because every page brought some new embarrassment. Not because every page brings a new tingling labia or a rim job (there's only one of the latter, though so much of the former, enough ring-a-ding tingling to make the worst Christmas carol ever) or because I blush easily. No, the problem is that it's not enough to just do a Killer Inside Me-style "Hey, y'all, I'm a major sociopath and it's a hoot" and add some ripped-from-the-headlines woman-on-boy sexual predation. Nutting writes the character but announces motivation (and repeats it often) rather than exploring it. It's a stunt novel, not an adequate story or an insightful portrait or even a smart satire. Also, I'm glad Grandma Foster can't read my reviews.

While I appreciate the attempt of portraying a female as a predator, I felt that the character was completely lacking in depth. She was purely selfish with no discernible personality traits beyond her own gratification. There was no attempt to offer her redeeming qualities or any substance to her character, which made it difficult for me to care about what was going on with her. I didn’t care whether she got a punishment or not. Yes, I was disgusted by the graphic details of what she was doing. However, I don’t understand why she was portrayed as if she was a robot with absolutely no emotion or internal conflict about her actions. She’s a predator not a psychopath.

Also, the pacing felt super rushed after Jack’s father had a heart attack, further undermining the emotional weight of the story.

DID NOT FINISH

i love books that explore darker themes and explores the pyschology of a character, but i didn't like the way it was written, and it felt obscene in a way that i wasn't sure what the point was.
