I just didn’t get anything out of this. I read it as a precursor to reading Percival Everett’s ‘James’, but I don’t know if I’ve gained anything from reading this. The use of the slur throughout was excessive at times, and the adventures that are meant to propel the story felt very confusing and disjointed. I found it hard to follow and an incredibly sluggish read.

I'm so disappointed. "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" is one of my favorite books, so I was really excited to read more about Huck.
This novel started off so strong. The first 100 pages were good! The story was interesting and it was very clear why this book was impactful for its time (anti-slavery and racism and all). But then the plot just fell apart.
I don't know why Twain thought it was a good idea to veer off the path nearly halfway through the book. But one minute it's a genuinely good story about a runaway slave and a boy from an abusive home. The next it's a satirical comedy show with obnoxious side characters, and unnecessarily overcomplicated plot devices.
Don't even get me started on the ending when Tom shows up again. That was just a hot mess.

Quite a departure from Tom Sawyer, as this is a bit more serious and mature, and certainly not as fun. Where Tom Sawyer cuts his own path and is the smartest person in the room, Huck Finn seems to ride the tide, and a bit duller and naive. He is on the run since everyone thinks he is dead, and Jim is with him to avoid being sold to New Orleans…way more serious stakes. I enjoyed myself still, and I loved the King and the Duke hijinks where they are showing how the professional scammers operate. That all being said, I way prefer Tom over Huck. Tom is a force to reckon with. Huck feels like a passive observer.

Seems a bit dates, to no surprise. The “N” word throughout is a little shocking. I didn’t like the main character and Jim was portrayed in such a racist light - maybe intentional, maybe not. I only listened to this to read James next.
I don't remember if I read this or Tom Sawyer in Junior English.
I was cackling at the end.
