An absolutely fascinating and often devastating memoir. Lady Glenconner has experienced so many ups and downs and the stories she shares throughout the book are very interesting. If you enjoy The Crown, or the lives of those close to the Royal Family, this is a must read.

great read especially during these uncertain times...truly takes you away and what an extraordinary life Anne has led...love her honesty, vulnerability, how she triumphed over adversity, her dedication and friendship with Princess Margaret and all while following traditions that kept her twice from inheritance...and what a lesson for how far women have come in her lifetime..and how far we still have to go.

I have such a fascination with ‘how the other half live’, even though I know it will just infuriate me.

This book makes it seem like a horrible existence full of spoilt, petulant, terrible humans with holier than thou attitudes. Overindulgence, terrible parenting, misogyny, racism, the full works. This book has it all.

Also, drinking ‘bull shots’ of beef consommé and vodka? Boke.

Really interesting, especially if you enjoy the Crown because it's written by the Queen's sister's lady in waiting. I only dropped it to a 3 instead of 4 stars because they writing was so-so but I still enjoyed it.

so this is how the other half live

I'm not usually a fan of non-fiction but the story of Anne Glenconner's life is so fantastic it almost feels like fiction. I must admit that I read a pre-release version of the book so I'm not sure if much changed, structurally, in the version that was released but I did sometimes find it hard to keep track of what was happening concurrently as the chapters were more organized by theme than chronology of time. Although many awful things happen to Anne across her incredible life, she remains steadfastly cheerful and soldiers on - truly a woman from a different time.

If you're interested in the Royals and enjoy reading non-fiction I'm sure you will love this!

Is it the best written memoir I’ve ever read? No. But did I have to read half of her anecdotes out loud because they were too much to keep to myself? Absolutely. She drops in things like, “he married that other girl and their daughter was Diana Spencer” or “he invited Brooke Shields to the castle for the weekend and her eyebrows weren’t the style at the time” as afterthoughts to her stories or gives you extremely old royal gossip.
