I’m going to keep this short and simple. If you love Klune and if you want adventure and epic love and magic, then pick up this series or don’t delay in finishing it!!

In essence, my review is just me reiterating what I’ve said for the first two installments. Though there are a multitude of shenanigans and inappropriateness and sheer madness, at its core this series is all about family, friends, and love made better and possible through the goodness of one zany wizard apprentice who is the glue that holds things together.

As always, Michael Lesley wonderfully brings this story to life with his unbelievably talented narration, giving distinct voices to every character, some who are now indelibly branded into my brain and whom I’ll never ever forget - most notably Kevin, Gary, and Tiggy (I love you big guy and giants rule)!

Klune doesn’t shirk on the emotions, the humor, and never on the feels that range from swoony to devastating to sheer amazement as to what he has created here!

Whether you read this or listen or both, hold onto your seats for one entertaining ride! This is definitely a buildup to the grand finale coming up in [b:A Wish Upon the Stars|33640227|A Wish Upon the Stars (Tales From Verania #4)|T.J. Klune|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1518903472l/33640227._SY75_.jpg|54491251], as this concludes with a gawd awful punch to the gut and heart. I so look forward to seeing the bad guys get their due comeuppance in only the grand style that I know Klune will deliver!

Thank you to the author/publisher for the audio in exchange for a honest review

The Consumption of Magic is the most "serious" of the Verania books so far.

The stakes start to weigh on Sam, and he is constantly pressured to make hard decisions. Everyone has designed a lonely path for him, and nobody seems to understand how hard it is for him to be separated from his friends and Ryan.

Kevin has a larger role in this book, and there are moments where he lets his casual sex-obsessed proud dragon act drop and show what he can really do. He is a dragon after all.

Randall and Morgan's backstory is shown in more detail, Justin is now part of the group, while Tiggy's mysterious past remains mysterious.

The humor and the steaminess is still there, the defining characteristic of the Verania series.

The last part of the book is a rollercoaster:
Spoiler The Great White reveals itself and it doesn't care about human wants and needs. Myrin lands a devastating blow to Verania, thanks to the betrayal of Ruv (I was SO happy he was a villain, I always found him sleezy) and the pettiness of Lady Tina. Morgan's loss and Ryan's near fatal injury devastate Sam, who decides to throw his dice with The Great White and the dragons for a year, in order to be ready to face Myrin.

The mentor dying is an old trope but somehow I did not expect Morgan to die. I thought the King and Randall as the most likely candidates. I can't wait for the finale of Sam's arc in the 4th book!

TJ Klune I hate you. Sure maybe I need to cry about some stuff but this one hit me right in the feels. Just be prepared if you are reading this series. This one will definitely hit your emotions. Definitely going to be reading the next one in line just so I know what will be happening next.

3.5 stars rounded up. Much, much darker than the previous two books combined, but I find that I really enjoy the darker turn the series has taken. It's hard to believe that the first book could ever lead to something like this.

The cliffhanger is near brutal, but the coda at the end definitely helps soften the blow some. I very much enjoyed the mated dragons and seeing all the dragons interact at the end was incredibly gratifying.

Probably my favorite in the series thus far. Am incredibly nervous to see how this ends up in the next book.
