I LOVED this. I thought the writing was fantastic and the exploration of flawed characters was done so well. There are trigger warnings for almost everything in this book, but again, I thought it was all handled very well.

I was very impressed with this as a debut and cannot wait to see what Coco Mellors writes next!

DID NOT FINISH: 14%

Such a drag. Genuinely awful…

This had the ingredients to be a book I really enjoyed- interesting character heavy, plot light- but it fell flat for me as so many of the side characters’ stories were totally unfinished (and they were more interesting than the main plot line anyway…). Overall I left very unsatisfied.

So good! This book is right up my alley in ways I didn’t expect. I adore books that reflect human relationships and highlight the idea that almost no relationship exists in a vacuum. We follow our titular characters, Cleo and Frank, as the meet and form a relationship in the heart of NYC. Cleo is a young, British artist in her twenties and Frank is an established ad man in his forties. They meet in the elevator on the tail of a NYE party and the rest is history.

While the book centers Cleo and Frank, we also get chapters from the perspectives of those in their circle and I thought this was so beautifully done. Honestly, the side characters had some of my favorite chapters (specifically Quentin and Eleanor).

The book had this light sense of constant melancholy around love that felt like a constant hum lingering in the background. Not always noticeable, but you tune in to it in the dull moments. It’s a gentle reminder that loving someone doesn’t always last and it definitely isn’t always sunshine and roses.

This book was not what I expected it to be in the best ways - I’ll cherish so many of the quotes from this piece. They found me at the right time.
