Some stories are sharp and cut right through, some are sweet and leave you all fuzzy and warm inside; others are intense and leave you emotionally exhausted. This one in particular was brutal. After having closed the book, you'd sit down and just contemplate over this story; a tale albiet fictional shed light on the real horrors of being 'the outcast'.
Tequila Leila takes us all along with her down memory lane at first...and boy you wish she didn't. Turkey in the 20th century went through a lot, not so much the people living there in the dark corners. A young girl forced into prostitution at the ripe young age of 17 and if not for The Five, might have lost hope in living altogether. Her beloved friends as mentioned are (i personally believe) the stars of Leila's story and made me honour the bond 'water families' forge over blood relations. A piece of advice from them all; cherish and respect your loved ones regardless of what they are and how they live. In a conservative society, things are bound to get rough and for the worse even.
The story was unique and I loved the exploration of Istanbul.
I'll definitely be exploring this author further!!
