I enjoyed learning about this amazing writer and her life. Who knew that she interacted with so many greats, like Emerson, Thoreau, Henry James, Hawethorn and many others. No wonder she wrote so well, she was influenced by the best. While I enjoyed the history, I didn't really enjoy the narative style the author used.

Having a very hard time with this. There seems to be a lot of speculation and no sources sited. There are no conversations, just a jumble of facts trying to be a story. I hope to struggle through it, but it is hard.

I did complete the book. More than halfway through it became interesting. What an amazing woman! I did not like her father, though.

Having loved "Little Women" and "Jack & Jill," I was very curious about Louisa May Alcott. This book provided a very informative look into Alcott's life and personality. Besides being an extremely interesting biography, "Invincible Louisa" was easy to read because of the flowing prose. My only complaint was that perhaps the author was a little too enamoured of all things Alcott. There was absolutely no criticism whatsoever of Branson Alcott (Louisa's father) and his interesting, yet failed business plans. I'm convinced the Alcotts were fine, upstanding, smart people but surely one could discuss the few faults they had and still admire them.
However, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and felt I learned much. I recommend this book to anyone who loved "Little Women," or to anyone who likes to read biographies about interesting people.

Louisa May Alcott was an amazing young woman. Her parents both had strong personalities, compassionate hearts, and a great love for learning. Louisa herself takes after them. She had a strong bond with her parents and sisters, an imaginative mind, a strong work ethic, and also a big heart. I was pleased to see so much of Louisa in her book Little Women. Reading this book made me want to re-read Little Women and read something new by her. I also hadn't realized the connections between Louisa and the transcendentalists of the time. A great role model for girls and young women.

Upper elementary/middle school.

- I didn't know Little Women was based on Louisa May Alcott's life. There were so many similarities!

- The story was only interesting because I was learning about a beloved author. It was pretty slow and boring for most of the time. Most of the book was telling and not showing.

- Woo! Another Newbery read!

1934 Newbery Award
Very nice biography of Louisa May Alcott in a very relaxed narrative. Definitely some bias showing, but it is great to hear the background of the novels that Alcott wrote.

4 1/2 Stars. I felt that this biography gave a very thorough description of Louisa May Alcott's life without adding unwanted detail. I enjoyed reading this biography very much.

I guess this was better than a lot of these ancient Newberry winners. A lot of 1930s-style moralizing, though

This was the 1934 Newbery Medal Winner and is the story of the author of Little Women. I think that she had a very fascinating life but thought the author wrote about it in a boring way. It was fun to see how she mirrored Little Women after her own family, all the famous authors her family was friends with, her part in the Civil War, and how she handled fame. If you are a die-hard Little Women fan, then I would recommend this book to you.
