Started slow but eventually kept my interest. Found it a bit predictable but a good read despite that
Wonderful mystery with well developed characters. Glad to have a new author for the new year.

I enjoyed this, but there were some elements I found a bit annoying. However, it was a fast-paced, fun read and things really get going at the end - I could not put this down! Hence why I give it a 4 here on GR.

I’ll try more of this series but I have to say there are a few cringeworthy things in this first installment, most notably a lack of respect for the sanctity of marriage…and not only by side characters. Given that there will (of course) be lasting repercussions of this, my eyes rolled back even more in my head.
Oh and why is a female author writing about her main character’s physical attributes (a size 14! Egads!) over and over again the way she does? Just no.

3.5 This book was gifted to me by my sister-in-law because she saw that it was on sale and thought that it sounded interesting. While I thought this was overly generous of her, I have to admit that I was a bit dubious. Crime fiction is not my genre of choice when it comes down to it. That being said, I absolutely flew through this book. I think I could have read it in one sitting if we didn't have things going on that I needed to do on the day that I started it. So, why only a 3.5 stars then Abby. First of all, I have an issue with the fat-shaming in this book. Ruth is 12 Stone in weight, which to my knowledge is pretty average (and definitely smaller than I am) and she is constantly called massive, fat, too large to be a police officer, too big to be able to wear colours, etc. I can't deal with that (I struggled with this in Liane Moriarty's book too). Let's stop calling average-sized women fat and then just stopping it there. We need some help with body positive literature. Also, there was an excessive amount of infidelity in this book. Like, why was everybody cheating on everybody? Is that really necessary? And finally... the killer. There was a point in the book where the murderer literally told everyone to not go where he was hiding the girl... It just left for an anti-climatic ending, and we didn't really get any sort of motivation behind his actions. There were just a few places where this fell flat for me, but I am still amazed that I flew through a book so outside of my comfort zone. It definitely gives me hope that I can find some crime fiction books I really love in the future.
DNF at 32%.
This book is awful. I lost count of the amount of times she mentioned her weight it felt extremely unnecessary and fat phobic. How crazy is it for a main character to call herself “Fat” a million times within the first chapter alone (and it didn’t stop there)when it has NOTHING to do with the story?! And to put an actually weight and size to said fat label is taking it too far. I just imagined the people reading this book who are that size and bigger and how uncomfortable that is! It’s not even like Ruth was the only one to mention her weight, the other characters did it too.
Beyond that the characters were superficial and flat. The author basically type casted every character they all had one trait that made up their whole personality. The only reason I made it as far as I did is because I don’t DNF books before reading at least 100 pages. I really wish I would’ve broke my rule
