The atmosphere of this book was awesome. I instantly fell in love with the world. However, the ending made the main motive of the main character pointless. I would probably recommend this book to someone for the atmosphere but not the storyline.

I listened to this and while the magic system was lowkey confusing as hell, (would be fun to explore it via full length novel) the overall story was engaging, short, and very sweet. Also Polk cranked out some banger lines with this. holy shit. Masterful descriptive language and at times, very poetic. I also love that the characters are so culturally accurate for the time and they just fit right in. Beautiful work

I think the best review of this novella I could give is that I wish it was longer. I'm typically not much of a film noir detective girl, but if more of them were like this one, I would change my mind. I think the world was so interesting, and while I appreciate how the author doesn't hold your hand when explaining stuff, I wish we had more time to really flesh it all out.

The only thing I knew before reading this was "lesbian needs to find magic serial killer to reclaim her soul and stay with her gf" and I think that's all you need to know. Where's the next book set in this world hmmmm?
