The first half of this was 5 stars for me but lost steam in the 2nd half because I found the angels far less compelling. Then that ending pissed me off for how it gave the MC ZERO character growth. Because if I were Edith what do you MEAN we could've been together for an eternity but instead you sold your soul to bring me back and now we only have 10 years together?? It's like that one experiment on delayed gratification with the kids and the marshmallows lol

This was pretty interesting!
I was initially intrigued by this book because I don't think I've ever read anything that was a detective noire with supernatural elements and lesbians. And it turns out that a detective noire with supernatural elements and lesbians could be pretty interesting! The mystery and the worldbuilding were immediately very compelling. The characters were pretty compelling as well, although the there wasn't a wide variety (or diversity) of interesting characters. The climax also seemed pretty rushed. There wasn't a real sense of stakes because things were moving so quickly. And then the ending was much more positive than I expected. A part of me was relieved that the characters go to have a happy ending but a part of me was a little disappointed that it wasn't more tragic. I think I wouldn't have felt this way if the climax and resolution were a little less rushed.
But overall, this was an interesting story in an interesting world.
