Had to keep reading this, even though it's almost midnight and I have a headache. How many secrets and how many predators can one small town fit? A lot, apparently.
The whole setting was perfect for a horror/thriller novel, with the quarry swimming holes and the tunnels underneath the town connecting all the basements.
The endingwas still somehow hopeful, with Heather, Junie and their mom and Gloria sticking together, and Beth as well .

I liked this book a lot, and it's another book I would have liked better if I wasn't listening when i was busy getting ready or sleepy, but I started it when I was getting ready and driving to work and liked it enough I wanted to listen to it whenever I could. It says it's a thriller, but really it reminds me more of a mystery/crime who did it book. It is loosely based on crimes of seriel killers in 1977. The main character Heather has two friends disappear and she searches for the truth. I love that it showcases women's struggles with abusive men and law enforcement to keep us safe and get us justice when crimes happen against like. I think we have improved on that since the 70s, but we still have a ways to go. If you like true crime stories, thrillers, or mysteries, I recommend this book.
This book just wasn't for me. It kept triggering me to the point of almost did not finish. The writing style wasn't bad but the triggers for me bothered me too much to enjoy.
Every Town Has Its Secrets.
Pantown, St. Cloud, MN Summer of 1977.
Brenda, Meredith, and Maureen are best friends on the cusp of womanhood. This summer was supposed to be spent going to festivals, partying at the quarry and playing in their band, instead it will change their lives forever.
Girls around town are going missing and there’s a suspected serial killer on the loose. One night while exploring the tunnels under their neighborhood Brenda & Meredith see something that changes what they thought they knew about their town and the men in it. Who do you trust when you can’t trust anybody?
The Quarry Girls was heavy. Jess Lourey did an excellent job portraying the loss of innocence and the realization that you don’t truly know anybody.
This was the first book of hers that I’ve read but I will definitely read more.
I really enjoyed the tunnels under the neighborhood that connected all the houses! It’s creepy but interesting at the same time.
If you’re considering giving this a read then you do need to be aware of some TW/CW: SA, CSA, Mental Illness, Drug Abuse, Murder

Didn’t love the narrator so preferred to read rather than listen. At times was hard to follow and predictable

I've been putting off reading this for a long time. It was kind of a slow start, but really picked up. I was really surprised in the end and enjoyed it.
