This one was rough. I can't really say much without spoilers but I twas too detailed and made me hate the world. Especially for young girls in the 70s
I didn't want to put this down! Set in the 1970s in a small town in Minnesota, coming off all the bicentennial celebrations, the summer of 1977 changed many people's lives. Pantown is a suburb of Saint Louis, where everyone knows you or your parents. No one ever leaves Pantown. Three girls die, and their killers are in plain sight.
Pantown has tunnel systems that connect the basements under the houses together that is mostly used by the kids to run back and forth to their friend's houses. The tunnels are unlit and rarely do they see an adult in the tunnels. One night the kids are playing in the tunnels when one of them opens a basement door that is not locked. What they see dislodges everything they ever believed. It disturbs them to their core.
I wasn't prepared for what they saw or what followed. This story had more twists and turns and I couldn't look away. The author has a way of creating the atmosphere that you felt you were right there with them. I didn't know if I should be scared, sick, or totally captivated by her tale. Her use of the quarries only draws more on the darkness of this town. Painting an eerie picture of what life was like during this time.
Based on true events, I won't be forgetting this story for a long time. I do suggest looking at the trigger warnings for this book. I was caught off guard by some. I would love to have read another chapter or more of this story because I think the author did such a great job of bringing it to life that I wasn't ready for it to end. It was great storytelling and a talent for disturbing the reader. This was my first book by this author and I'm looking forward to reading more of her books.
I also wonder how often these events took place without anyone knowing. How often did people hid the monsters they or their family members were? I had a hard time putting the pieces together for this story because everything was so woven together it was hard to pull just one string without catching others. I don't want to spoil anything so I won't say more. READ THIS BOOK!
