This book kept my attention and I read it in about two days. I’m from MN so liked the local connection to the story. The book had some thought provoking statements for sure. I was a little disappointed in how it wrapped up, not sure why but left me wanting for something. Maybe it got wrapped up too quickly, while still not addressing some loose ends/clues dropped throughout. Overall really enjoyed this book and it got me out of my reading slump!

“No one can carry another's burden, but we can bear witness to the pain.”

“This loser had made a biological act so imperative that he was willing to go to prison to feel the same relief he could get with his own hand.”

“Men in packs can do terrible things, things they wouldn't have the hate to do alone.”

“And once you understand the truth, there's no living any other way.”

I love books based on real events, this was no exception. I do wish the first half hadn't been so slow.Way too many flashbacks that I didn’t care about, especially during important scenes. It didn't really get interesting until about 60% into the book. I will say, it did have me constantly guessing, although all my guesses were somewhat correct(which is so sad) and while some of the outcome wasn't a surprise, it all wrapped up very nicely, though sadly. There were definitely things I was not expecting. This was a heartbreaking read but so good. I especially loved the parts with Beth. The story also made me very curious about Pantown and the tunnels. I could totally imagine myself as a kid growing up with the excitement and fun of having my neighborhood connected underground! Thanks to Amazon First Reads for the opportunity to read this book!

Rating: 3 Stars

Mood: *Triggered*

Small town with big city crime, violence and atrocities. Of course, with most small towns, ignorance, and "if we don't talk about it, it didn't happen."

Triggers:
SpoilerSA, weird-incestuous-like "relationship", Pedo behaviors that are normalized.

The plot just seemed off to me the whole read. While it was engaging and interesting enough to finish and mostly enjoy. I felt as though it was rushed at the end of the book instead of being thought out and enjoyable.
The ending really through me off and I felt as though some of it was a bit far fetched.
