The Price Of Scandal

Lucy Score

4.1 AVERAGE

What happens when the squeaky clean, if not icy, CEO of a beauty brand finds herself in the middle of a scandal that only a high-profile PR specialist with unorthodox methods can get her out of? Let’s find out!

Read if you like: Contemporary romance, spice, enemies to lovers, forced proximity, a bit of mystery and danger, lady billionaire friends, protective alpha males, boss babes with golden hearts, and a whole lot of fun.

Emily Stanton has a picture-perfect life that she worked her butt off to obtain, no thanks to her pretentious family. Workaholic is not a strong enough word to describe her dedication to the company she helped create. When she shockingly gets sucked into an image ruining scandal just before a huge new business proposal. Both Emily and the board of executives think it’s a bit too coincidental. While Emily wants to proceed as usual but the board has other plans and quickly hires a fixer who can whip even the toughest PR disaster into a perfectly marketable persona.

Derek Price will do whatever it takes to get his clients PR worthy. He doesn’t mind playing fast and loose with the rules, as long as he maintains a professional relationship with his clients. He built his reputation and his business on his perfect track record and undeniable results. But the enigmatic Emily has his interest piqued… and then some. Can he break through that icy exterior and melt her with his charms? But none of that matters if he can’t figure out who was out to ruin Emily in the first place.

This book was so much fun. Lucy Score always builds the best communities. We get a wide range of friends, family, and coworkers to laugh along with as we follow Emily and Derek through their professional to very personal relationship. This is also the first of four books about lady billionaires, who despite being wildly successful, all need some romance in their lives: The Bluewater Billionaires. So, beyond the delicious romantic tension and spice we have a sassy and caring core of friends to carry us through the rest of the series.

I love Emily and Derek. They are both characters who are good solo but better together. It was nice to see a love story develop because they wanted a connection instead of needing support. (And it’s totally fine to need support… don’t come for me.) Their banter was great and the shenanigans are topnotch. I love an alpha male who can defer to an alpha woman. What you get in this book is a couple of prickly pears figuring out that they can show their gooey centers without having to give up all they had worked for and finding meaning and strength in the middle of a messy situation. And I love a man who will work to get his lady. And Derek will not quit.

Com got in the way of rom

Funny and well-written at the chapter level, but as a whole it was a bit of a slog. I feel like setting up the series, with all the detailed, frequent interactions among the billionaire women and all the neighborhood idiosyncrasies took up too much space and derailed the story a bit. The villain(s) were obvious from the start and a bit cartoonish. On the upside, Jane (with her stun gun) was a hilarious side character, and I loved how smart Emily was and how hot and bothered her displays of intellect made Derek. Overall, the book felt too long for how much story it contained, and all the goofiness got in the way of romance. I found myself skimming, itching to finish. It wasn't bad, just wasn't great.

Billionaire trope flipped

Love the Bluewater “vajillionaires”! Well written characters and dialogue, hot smexy times, competence and strength and friendship...things that I love to see in romance novels, but are really hard to find. Crossing my fingers that the others books are this good!

DNF at 35% - most un likeable hero I’ve ever read who sexually harasses the heroine and it’s meant to be funny.

This one was a little bit of a slow start for me, but I blame it on the fact that it was enemies to lovers, which is not one of my favorite tropes. It did pick up though and I ended up enjoying it. I really liked Emily. It's nice to read about a really smart female. When it's the woman with the money and the power. I love how it ended and will definitely continue reading this series
