killing myself

I loved this book and I loved this series. As always, Tahir’s writing is beautifully lyrical and the story was near perfection. I was expecting more tears, but A Sky Beyond the Storm was a fitting ending to a wonderful series.

My my, this book was a perfect end to the series. I do wish they Helene got a better ending. She deserved her happy ending. She lost her whole family and lover. Not cool Robert Frost (iykyk). She should have been with Harper. However I am glad that Laia and Elias got their happy ending. That would have been unforgivable if they didn’t. All three went through the wringer and faced so much but came out better because of it. Amazing series couldn’t recommend it enough. :)

Note: this review is for the series as a whole, as I read all four books over the course of three days.

I loved this series, and could not put it down. Every mystery, plot twist, and Chekov's Gun was treated with the necessary attention and pulled off magnificently in a satisfying way. The chemistry between Elias and Laia remained electric throughout the series, and Helene's character arc is probably one of my favorite I've seen in a fantasy series in a while (side note, I am a sucker for plotlines about aunts stepping up for their nieces/nephews, so as soon as that came up in the third book I knew I was going to have a very quick turnaround on Helene after being a little less interested in her than the other two leads). The fact that the love Laia still somehow managed to keep for the Night ringer despite his betrayal and everything and his love for her was the saving grace was a wonderful twist, and a very nice change to the usual heroine-falls-for-the-villian-and-he-betrays-her tropes.

The world building in the series was phenomenal, and I'll be thinking about all this different components of that for a long time. I'll also be thinking about the concept of forgiveness, which is definitely an underlying thread in all the novels. Is forgiveness something we give unconditionally or is it earned? Must forgiveness come first from within or without? Is it necessary to find peace and how is it tied to acceptance of ourselves?
