Min Jin Lee knows how to write a BOOK. I don't even care that her books are so ridiculously long because I'm invested in every single word of them! It's so painful yet gripping to follow Casey's story and all of the struggles and decisions she has to face, and especially how she continues to fall and claw her way back to some semblance of a dream. It's really a story that you have to read for yourself, and I highly recommend it!

I may have liked this more than Pachinko.

Disappointing compared to Panchinko, but an interesting portrayal of Asian immigrant life in the US.

This book was overwhelming and yet so enjoyable. I strangely don’t feel like I can rate it 5 stars because I found it be a difficult read. Difficult, in that I was constantly wrestling with emotions. That isn’t a bad quality but I couldn’t get lost in it and I occasionally had to even put it down.

I loved the way the author moved throughout time and I’m thankful for the relationships that survived.

There should also be a rape trigger warning!

For the first time, I went back through my highlights on Kindle and saw what had spoken to me:
“Casey had no picture of herself in a white gown or image of Jay in formal dress standing beside her.”
“the humiliating cost of a social life in Manhattan”
“convention ruined all the women she knew”
“He was amazing at integrating several people into one discussion”
“Again, she had talents that were essentially inapplicable to her life.”
“Unu looked fondly at his hat on the chair beside him.”
“Makes you feel rich to not behave that way”
“Lately, Casey hated missing church.”
“‘I am doing the best I can.’ ‘No one ever doubts that of you. You should perhaps do less.’”
“I hope this book pleases you.”

I’m pleased!

Wildly disappointed by the debut novel from the author of my favorite novel Pachinko. This was almost painful to read and I did not finish
