Boring writing boring story
A lesson to myself : do not hesitate to DNF a book as soon as I feel like it, because it never gets better, this kind of wish always goes to waste!

truly weird

Spoiler
This book was.... interesting.
It only took me a few days to read it, but I was a bit disappointed by the end. I was hoping there would be a little more to it. I wasn't expecting a happy ending. I did at least hope her father would find out what his "skill" was. It was worth reading, but slightly strange.

My childhood and adolescence was a lot like Rose’s (and Joe’s, somewhat). This book was a gut punch.

Am I the only one who loves Aimee Bender but didn't like this book?

Someone said it reminded them of The Wonder Years...ditto. But that's not a good thing.

I was disheartened when I learned that this book was read by the author--I'm sorry, but that's usually not a good thing. And, just like I thought, the reading was monotone. I would have stopped if this weren't an Alex winner. After serving on the Alex committee for 3 years, I know I disagree with some books that are put on the list, and this is one I would have fought against. I can't picture any of my teens reading it--it's more of an older-woman-public-library-book-club novel. Sure, the premise is great--how cool is it that Rose can taste the feelings of the cook in what she eats? But the slowness of the action (or lack there of) and the slow magical realism disappointed me.
