Not my favorite Austen, but the audiobook narrated by Rosamund Pike was excellent!

I cannot express how much I love this book. And Jane Austen in general. I reread it at least once a year, and it's my go-to "having a crappy day, need a good cry with a happy ending" book. I love it so. But then who doesn't love Jane Austen?

The story is set around the Dashwood family. In the opening scene we learn that Mr. Dashwood is dying leaving his second wife and three daughters from that marriage with very little money to live on. Mr. Dashwood's dying wish is that his son from his first marriage vow to take care of his stepmother and half sisters. I don't believe that John Dashwood is a bad person, I think that his wife is very self centered and often manipulated him out of doing the right thing by often "suggesting" what another person "really meant". Although, usually what that person really means is to benefit Fanny.

The Mrs and Miss Dashwoods move to a smaller cottage that better suits their income and needs, but not before Fanny's brother Edward visits them at Norland. Elinor and Edward "form an attachment" (don't you just love that phrase?) But, oh no!! Edward is secretly engaged to the less than stellar Lucy Steele!!

Marianne, meanwhile, in their new home, catches the eye of Colonel Brandon, (swoon!!) but deems him to be too old, and unworthy of her attentions. She soon sets her sights on the cad, Willoughby who of course is not worth much more than his pretty speeches. Although, I admit he has his good ones. Colonel Brandon steps back to not interfere with Marianne's wishes and happiness but never stops loving her.

Okay, Jane Austen fans...who do you think ends up with who?? And which man gives the best "I love you" speech??

I love Colonel Brandon. He is like my ideal man, in a way. He's a complete gentleman whom everyone likes and goes out of his way to do what he thinks is best, yet will sacrifice his own happiness to promote the happiness of those he holds dear. And, he has some of the greatest speeches ever.
