My neighbor recommended this book to me a couple of years back and it had been lying on my shelf ever since. She said this book helped her in disciplining her daughter. I finally got to read it as it's getting difficult to handle my son's tantrums, which have become more frequent because of this crazy year and the lockdown. It appears I already know what this book is talking about and I am already following most of the tips from this book. I had read this author's other book called Whole-brain child and probably was using ideas from that book. But still I got many useful tips from this book too. Pick it up if you want to discipline without yelling at your kids.

Strategies in this book are solid. Will be using much of this in my parenting. As with many self-improvement books, it seems to hammer home the same concept over and over and over, but this is a good concept.

I definitely took the information from this book with a grain of salt. Some things I thought were brilliant while others were obvious or not helpful.

With that being said, I still loved this book. It really helped me focus on teaching opportunities with my son rather than always doling our punishments. After trying some of the ideas from the book, my sons temper tantrums reduced greatly and i have actually been able to get to the heart of problems rather than just reacting to his reactions. I have also noticed that my son responds better to me using some ideas from the book vs. his dad (my husband) who has not been following the same ideas.

For now at least the ideas from this book have helped.

This book did a ret good job of giving real examples of discipline going poorly and how to address it respectfully to teach our children. I highly recommend this.

Great thoughts on mindful parenting. As I listened to this audiobook I kept thinking that while this is a self help book written with practical advice for teaching emotional intelligence as “discipline” for kids, its really helping adults overcome the lack of skills they missed out on through more punitive discipline they probably received as a child. I don’t think my parents were particularly harsh in discipline, but I definitely didn’t learn how to recognize/name my emotions or know what to do with them until I was an adult and out of the house.

I loved the concept that when kids are misbehaving they are basically demonstrating to you where they are missing skills, whether that is emotional awareness, communication skills, or understanding what to do with their bodies when they feel big emotions. The acronyms they used were a bit too long to remember and I felt like I would need to reread practical advice in order to really understand how to implement it, but that is probably more of a reflection on my current ability to take in new information than their ability to communicate it. This book is geared more towards older, communicating children, rather than the toddler stage I’m in now, but I figured I’m getting a head start and can work on my own reactions to unwanted behavior first.

I wish I had emotional awareness skills earlier on and hope to learn how to give that to my children, not to mention be better at controlling my own reactive “reptilian” brain. So I’m adding more audiobooks by these authors to my queue.
