Unread shelf project 2021: book 101.

This first book in the Aru Shah series was a fun romp through the Kingdom of Death, with a good balance of humor, tension, action, and character growth. Throughout the book, Aru learned a lot and had to challenge a lot of her own beliefs. While this is a MG read, I think it’s really suitable for anyone of any age who’s interested in Indian mythology and adventure stories. Very stress relieving to read and a good choice for “nightmare antidote” as it was not graphic or distressing!

Charming, funny, and a powerful story of sisters.

Fans of Percy Jackson series will love this fresh take on Hindu Mythology! Aru is a one of a kind main character in that she is a liar by nature but it's because she has such a huge imagination. Boo was hilarious. I absolutely loved Roshani's writing in A Star Touched Queen and I felt that her rich and imaginative writing really shined writing a Young Reader book! I can't wait to see where book two will go.

Oh, this was such a fun adventure! I loved the overall theme of girl power. The girls felt very age appropriate and the jokes and dialog were hilarious. I loved every bit of this and I’m excited to get to the next one in the series.

Karakter Aru nih agak susah diterima oleh kesabaranku. Annoying banget bocah ini Dewa Ratu. Syukurlah ada Mini. Penyeimbang, lawan tangguh malah ya, kalau Aru udah rada-rada sangklek. Soalnya Mini lemot xD Mini kocak banget dah. Convonya sama Aru tuh menghibur sekali ya.

Kita geser ke mitologinya. Sebagian besar orang udah pasti tau epos Mahabharata/Ramayana.

Soalnya Mbak Roshani kocak gaes. Saranku cuma kalian musti sabar aja ngadepin Aru. Masih 12 tahun. Kudu sabar menjajaki karaktere. Jujur aku baca ini jangka waktunya lama bukan karena penceritaannya nggak menarik. Aku berusaha banget nggak ngambil ember buat mukol kepala Aru soalnya. Wkwkwkwkwkwkwkwkwkk.

The mythology is fun, but I never really liked a single one of the characters. This book is trying SO HARD to be the next big thing, but it never gets there, which is a shame.

On the bright side, school ends so soon!

It is a solid YA novel. I found Aru and Mini to be endearing characters, and the story overall exciting. I also learned a lot about Hinduism. Overall, though, I found the character introductions and overall development to be lacking. Ultimately, I'm going to continue reading the series because the storyline is intriguing; fingers crossed that character development improves throughout the series!
