i knew going into this that i'm not the audience for this book. but i was still hoping it would be an interesting enough read to bypass that. it did succeed in keeping my attention but i wish i were 15 years younger to fully appreciate a hindu version of percy jackson. little me would have loved this.

3.5

I’m definitely not the target demographic for age. Still really cool to see Hindu mythology incorporated in a Percy-Jackson-esque quest and world building. However, there was sooooo many small quests (3 main ones split into 3 each). And the creatures and characters the MC meets barely get more than 2 small chapters (less than 10 pages). Because of this, the story did not flow as much as I would have wanted, and I caught myself skimming and then going back to reread certain paragraphs because I missed the introduction of the next quest character.

The majority of the book only had two protagonists. While the MC was interesting enough, I wanted the other protagonist to carry the dialogue and story more. This book really needed a trio (the snarky animal guide sadly was not enough) to create more interesting dialogue and interactions.

Will still likely read the next book and see how the story and the world expands.

This was Not For Me.

I haven't read much middle grade, and this book was not written for me. The first few chapters were all about Aru worrying about what her rich bitchy friends think of her and lying to make a good impression. The humor is probably great if you are 12, but it also was Not For Me. I started this for a reading challenge but I'm letting myself tap out of this one.

Just finished this with my boys and it was great fun. They enjoyed the world and characters and I enjoyed the jokes and light-heartedness throughout. It is a great family read for sure and we are looking forward to book #2.

I'm not the right audience for this book. Would have loved it if I was 20 years younger. Definitely has Percy Jackson vibes.

Tales are slippery, her mother has often said. The truth of a story depends on who is telling it.

100% agree, Mrs. Shah.

This is my first time reading a book that is based on Hindu mythology and turns out it's really interesting!

Don't worry if you've never watched any Indian movies or read any Hindu mythologies because this book tells the story in a fun way and also there's a glossarium at the end of the book.

This book is enjoyable for me. The story pace is perfect and there are a lot of moral messages that you can get.

And this is weird, but my favorite character from this book is Boo, a dove. I like his sarcasm lol.

Even though it's enjoyable, I couldn't say that this is my favorite book because I feel it's kinda young for me ( I know it's MG but oh my god, I feel really old). I think if I read this when I was younger, I would love it more.

But if you're looking for an easy-reading and fun fantasy book, then I recommend you to put this book in your list
