I love this duology!

3 stars: nice overall, but time travel is confusing and Nicholas gets on my nerves.

The storyline: where the first book was quite a singular storyline (get the astrolabe and save the world), this story follows two storylines. Nicholas wants to find Etta, but Etta wants to find the astrolabe. That in itself is good, I think, for it creates a dynamic between the two main characters that wasn't there before. But the whole storyline gets complicated by the whole time travel thing. There is just so much that is either unclear, or just not answered. And if one timeline isn't enough, there's some alternate timelines as well. And then we get introduced to some god-like person who runs his own cult. Also, some other things remain unanswered or just didn't stick with me. For example, why did

kill Alice?

The characters: as the book progressed, I started liking Nicholas less and less. I'm not sure if it's different in the first book or if I just didn't notice, but he is very, very bossy. Not sure if it's some misguided form of protection, but he keeps telling his fellow travellers don't do that, stop it, give it to me, follow my plan and it bummed me out a bit. But as opposed to Nicholas' falling star, we have Sophia's rising star. Like I said in my review for Passenger, Sophia is unlikable. She does things for herself and takes no shit. She softens up somewhat near the end of the book, especially after her feelings towards a certain character grow, but it doesn't compromise her. The relationship between Nicholas and Etta felt a bit forced. They are apart for a long time after having known each other only for a short while, and they keep romanticizing their image of the other in their head (my girl Sophia calls them out on their bullshit tho).

The worldbuilding: this is one of the strongest points of the book, which is good because I'm a sucker for worldbuilding. While the whole time travel part remains a confusing ball of wibbley wobbley timey-wimey stuff, the eras are all set up really well. There are some places visited that are a bit obnoxious, like Paris, or London during the Blitz, but other places are more off-the-beaten-track, like Carthage.

The atmosphere: what I like is that Etta's chapters often use metaphors based on music, while Nicholas' chapters use imagery based on sailing. It shows the world these two have grown up in very different settings, and those settings shaped who they are.

Best part: Sophia's snarky remarks.

wayfarer funktioniert für mich ganz wunderbar. and here’s why:

I’m really struggling with how to rate this! When I read Passenger last year, I remember liking it enough to want to read the sequel, but not loving it. So when I picked up Wayfarer, I was a little nervous. I‘ll be honest—I found the first 200 pages to be really slow. All I wanted was a certain reunion. But once I resigned myself to the fact that that wasn’t happening for anytime soon, the booked really picked up and I LOVED the next 300 pages! They were a roller coaster of action and emotion and I flew through it.

Nicholas. NICHOLAS. Boy, how I love him. He had my poor heart breaking so many times. He’s selfless, almost to a fault, and I just wanted to strangle him! But let’s take a second to talk about the secondary characters in this because they are who truly got me through. I immediately loved Henry—his interactions with Etta were just the sweetest. Julian made me laugh out loud quite a few times. I even found myself liking Sophia! And of course, Li Min. What a crew!

As much as I enjoyed this book as a whole, I just wanted MORE. I mean I waited 82% of the book for the aforementioned reunion to happen and, while adorable, lasted only like 4 pages! And by the end of the book, Nicholas and Etta shared only about 10 pages. Not enough time for the romantic in me! I also wanted MORE from the ending. More Etta and Henry interactions, more of Sophia with Li Min, more Julian! I love how everything came together, but I’m not a big fan of open endings, so a few more pages would have been great.

Everything I loved about the first book was back again…and then some! The introduction of more traditional fantasy elements into the already fascinating aspect of time travel was something that elevated the entire story for me. Alexandra Bracken took the story of Etta and Nicholas and brought it to a whole other level. This entire book was a rollercoaster ride of action, adventure and emotion, and I couldn’t turn the pages quickly enough. I’m a huge fan of the slow burn, little mysteries being quietly covered until everything comes crashing together. “Wayfarer” did just that in the most perfect way. It was such a satisfying conclusion to an intense and epic story that spanned thousands of years and endless locations.

Above all, “Wayfarer” is the story of people who have been lost to circumstance…and to time. They have nothing more to lose…and because of this they are willing to put everything on the line. The stakes couldn’t have been higher in “Wayfarer” and the way in which Bracken expertly wove all the story lines together to create an epic finale was so amazing to experience.

4/5 stars

Yep, I admit it, I pretty much didn't leave my couch all day just so I could finish this book. On one hand, I was just dying to know what would happen and couldn't turn the pages fast enough, but on the other, I didn't want to leave this world or these characters. I really can't tell whether I liked this book more than Passanger or not. There were things that I loved about this book that I didn't love about the first one, but there are also things that frustrated the hell out of me (i.e. Separation of the love interests, argh). I did leave this book loving a lot more characters than when I went in. I was expecting to only really care about Nicholas and Etta, but I left with a handful of characters that I really didn't want to leave. One things for sure, this was a super emotional story for me and now I feel exhausted.

This book felt completely different to Passengers. While the first book in this series was adventurous and romantic, I feel like this one was slower and darker. This was neither good nor bad, there are things that I liked more in this book and things I thought were worse. For one, this book was less fun and fast paced than the first book. In saying that, there were some really exciting moments. I was also really addicted to this book and read it as fast as possible, so I guess it wasn’t all that slow.

One thing that was so much better about this book was the exploration of the different characters. In the first book, we focused almost completely on Etta and Nicholas, but in this one there were so many interesting characters. Sophie, for one, was explored in so much more detail in this book. I originally thought she was nothing much but an awful person, but throughout this book I came to realise that she was so much more than that. I also loved how she also got some romance action, because she deserved a life better than she was getting. I came to respect her so much more after this book, she was just a woman fighting to stay ahead in her male-dominated world. Another fantastic female character was Li Min. Not only was she badass, but she was also a fantastic representation of a queer woman in the 17th century.

“One day they will name a plague for you,” he said.
“Hopefully a particularly nasty one,” she answered. “A girl can dream.”

I really loved the continuation of the discussion of sex and race in this book. This was actually one of my favourite aspects and I found it really interesting. Another thing that I loved was the history. I loved travelling through time in the first book, but there were so many more interesting times that we explored in this one. This included the Russian Revolution which I really enjoyed since I’ve studied a lot about this time. No matter how fast the pace of the novel, there were so many entertaining and interesting aspects within it. This includes the characters, the themes of sexism and racism, and the history. Once again, the historical time periods were so vividly explored so I felt like I was there along with them. This is something that is so unique to this book for me.

Something that I absolutely hated about this book was the separation of Etta and Nicholas. My favourite part of book one was the romance, so you can understand how absolutely heartbroken I was when I realised that my loves would be separated for this entire book. This is one of my least favourite tropes and it frustrated me no end throughout the book. Although, the angst factor was increased tenfold in this novel, so I guess that was something. I also think this book introduced so many new magical elements to the story which I really didn't understand and thought made the whole world seem confusing.

“The things which are denied to us in life will never create a cage for our souls.”

Finally finished this book, which took just as long the first one did. only because it took me a bit to get into it, and some parts were too slow for me but all together it was a great book and I like Etta and Nicholas ending.

Could have really done without that last chapter. Otherwise this book was okay. It seemed rushed in places, where as the first one was just the right pace. Overall, a good duology and I will definitely be reading more from this author.

This book was a super nice end to the series. It did drag at points and i think re-reading this book will make the story flow better for me but i really liked it overall. I loved the new characters that we met and also the places we went to.

I loved them so so so much. There were so many negative reviews for the first book and that completely effected my decision to pick these this one up! Finally @clockworkreaders readalong made me pick it up. And boy was i wrong I completely fell in love with passenger and as I was about to finish it was franticly hoping I could get the next book and I was it in luck it was in stock and I got and than I read them back to back and even though I am mad that I didn't pick it up sooner I am also happy that I didn't pick it up cuz reading them together made it more perfect. Yay loved this journey. Even though it took me forever to finish them(snail, tired, moopey me I am atm) The adventure was amazing. Loved traveling from one place to another and I love the characters so much Etta, Nicholas, Julian , Sophia and the Spencer's and the Ironwood's and the hemlocks
