3.5 stars for sure. Maybe even 3.7.

Interesting book - I ripped through it in a couple days. For what it is it's perfect. Remarkably predictable but I think brown knows it and keeps the pace quick enough to where I didn't even care really. Such an easy read with a strong story, a cool idea for a society even with all the classic cliches being present.

He doesn't do anything overly interesting or innovative, his writing style is fairly mediocre but he knows plot points, some world building and I'll be damned if he doesn't have a quick pace. Tight little package of a book. A big reveal will literally be one sentence he doesn't care, on to the next thing. Taking a castle happens off screen who cares, a battle takes one sentence he's over it. I found myself not being too annoyed or bogged down by literally every fantasy cliche being present, with it being so digestible and interesting it's precisely what it's sold as. I give it a good out of 10.

More like 2.5….i fear some may hate me for this

The popularity of this book on booktok is the only thing that kept me from reading it for as long as it did. But now, I am absolutely kicking myself for taking so long to finally read it. I was also skeptical because I sometimes struggle with sci-fi, however, I am kicking myself for that as well.

From chapter one, I was immediately captivated and sucked right into this world and story created by Pierce Brown. The concept, world building and characters are some of my favorite I’ve ever read. This is like an “if you loved Hunger Games when you were younger, and are looking to evoke those same feelings now as an adult” kind of story. I am beyond hooked - I bought the next two books in the series when I was less than halfway through this one. Darrow and the Howlers give me life. I will ride or die for all of them.
