I enjoyed the characters and their relationships, and the world-building. I don’t remember being hugely invested in the story

Captivating and riveting, I really love Stuart Turton's brand of murder mystery. They blend science fiction with the thrill of an Agatha Christie novel perfectly to me and this one didn't disappoint at all. While not as good as I found 7 1/2 Death of Evelyn Hardcastle, this book was still an absolute riot. Fast paced and so much fun.

2.5 rounded up. I really wanted to like this book - I was a huge fan of 7½ deaths, and it started out great! Excellent world building, good characters, intriguing plot. However it just feels like it wasn't finished yet. He needed to cook this one a little longer, it let it sit for a long time then come back to it, or something!

As the book goes on it gets sort of hard to follow all the little details, the characters are running all over the place in unrealistic timelines, people seem to transition setting without the reader being notified, and their motivations randomly change. At the same time there is both incredible urgency and casual seeking conversation. I was listening on audiobook so that may account for some of the confusion but I just really wish he'd taken longer to perfect this. It could've been really special.

"They had a chance to change things, to write a different future, and instead they gave themselves to apathy. They let themselves believe the job was too big so they wouldn't risk failing. This is how you save the world, Emory. One failure at a time, but always in the right direction."
