The writing is great and the characters well developed, but the pace was just too slow to keep my attention.

3.5 Claire Randall a married combat nurse in World War II, is suddenly sucked back in time to Scotland in 1743. In order to save her life, the Scots decide that she must marry Jamie. Ah, Jamie. I think I might cheat on my husband with him too. Of all of the heroes I've encountered in all my years of reading, he would be in the top ten. Claire she got on my last nerve a few times, she seemed not to use her educated brain enough in the beginning.
The author writes with energetically jumping from adventure to adventure with hardly a rest in between. The passion and intensity with Claire and Jamie is amazing. Jamie and Claire encounter torture, (some very bloody and brutal) cruelty on a extreme level. Making it sometimes hard to read without tears. Finally near the end Claire rescues Jamie's soul, I was exhausted by the roller coaster of emotional epic journey. Their relationship developed, matured and was tested, but it never wavered.

I listened to this on audio. It is so long and the narrator spoke very clear and slow. Yes, that was nice but she was a bit too relaxed for my tastes. I was screaming for her to please just shut up and get on with it. I will not even listen to this series on audio it's too much for me. I read the second book and it was so much more pleasant.

I didn’t dislike this book but at 800+ pages and as crazy as some people are over it, I didn’t love it as much as I expected to. The characters are great and the writing is good. I found Claire’s angstiness irritating at times. There was also too much spice for me. At times it was like, here we go again. Also the amount of attempted SAs. I think of Claire alone there were 6-7. I found the last part of the book difficult to read and finish. I won’t give spoilers but it was detailed and gruesome. I will likely give the second book a shot but if they are all like this, I don’t know that I’ll finish the series, which is a shame but I want more plot and outside the bedroom action in 800 or more pages.
