Loved this.
I love the idea of writing a series in the same world with the same disaster leading to….different ways that humanity and civilization recovered and survived and having each book be self contained within that community, and also bit by bit building out this common world and past. So I love that this series seems to be doing that.
I love the premise and extreme difference in culture and values in this book vs The Giver. But, similar to my review of The Giver, this felt half baked and that it needed more depth, detail, and time to develop the characters. I feel like this plot and characters were less interesting and gave me less to think about and apply outside of reading, so 3 stars.

booooooo the characters are much more oblivious in this book than in The Giver and we only got a measely lil hint about Jonas at the, honestly, VERY abrupt ending where Kira has a “realization” about the mechanics of their community
also only three highlights this is an all time low
wish it was marketed as a standalone because as a sequel….. yikes

Not as good as The Giver. It feels like less happens in this book, but it is still captivating. This book mostly feels like set up for more to come and having only read The Giver years ago in school I did not know that there were more books. I do not know where these books are heading, which I am looking forward to.
Graphic: Child abuse
Moderate: Child death
Boring, didn't make sense, and I did not care about the characters
