I really liked the world explored in this one; a society that has reverted into a 'primitive' survival of the fittest type of community, where there are no room for those who can not fend for them selves. I also loved som of the characters, such as the mischievous Mat.
What lay beneath was, however, apparent quite early on which might have been because I'm an adult reading a middel-grade book.

When I read this I didn't know it was a companion to The Giver, I haven't read The Giver so maybe if I had Gathering Blue would have gained one more star. Even still it was a good book.
Unfortunately I read the initial book a while back so I don't remember the plot clearly. But this book was a good stand-alone novel discussing the topic of what we value in society and how that shapes behavior. I'm jumping right into Messenger after this one so as not to forget anything

The start of this book was very confusing and I was not sure I grabbed the right second book of the series at first because it didn’t match with the story of the first series. However I can see now how this will eventually maybe lead up to where the first book really set off. Even now I see loose connections but I still loved this dystopian society the book has created and how Kira the main character has begun to see the cracks within the society.
Though the dispassionate reader definitely detracted, I think the story itself fell short. The characters were underdeveloped, and the main character particularly seemed over-sheltered, having minimal understanding of how her world worked, and few words to describe what she did know. The story seemed more of a prelude to a larger story, and had little story arc of it's own; the book ends when the character is called to action and offers no suggestion as to what that action might be. While it may appeal to other readers, it definitely did not meet my own expectations.

My favorite by far in the Giver series.
